My dog gained weight after neutering. What dog food helps him lose it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 9 months old | 25 lbs

My rescue dog is 4 yrs. and was neutered last year right before we adopted him. He was thin, but now he’s put on 9 #s in less than a year! We’re measuring his food and cut way back ontraining treats. What brand kibble can we feed him that will help him lose weight?

You can try any food that mentions weight loss. Most of them will simply instruct you to feed less food than you are currently feeding, so another option is to simply decrease his current food intake. If he gets 2 cups a day, then start with 1.5 cups per day for a month and see what weight loss occurs. If you don't see results with that plan, discuss a prescription weight loss food with your vet. They are higher in fiber to keep dogs full while still decreasing caloric intake.

I would feed Muggs according to the package instruction on his food, and divide the daily amount into two equal portions. Make sure he gets at least 30-45 minutes of exercise twice a day, and do not give him any human food or treats at all. Sticking to his diet and making sure he has plenty of exercise will help control his weight :-)
