My puppy's broken tooth has an exposed root. Is surgery required?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Japanese Akita Inu | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 20 days old | 21 lbs

My puppy of almost 12 weeks has a broken canine. Only the very end is broken, but I believe the root canal got exposed since I can see a black dot at the end of the tooth, which looks like dead root canal. My vet (which I only know since this first appointment), said that the tooth should be removed. I am a bit worried about general anesthesia for the puppy as am unsure how important it is to go with the procedure, they said most other vets wouldn't do it. Can I get another opinion, please?

If the root is exposed, then yes the tooth has to be removed. Okanee is a good weight (21 pounds) and 12 weeks isn't too young for needed surgery. I'd recommend getting it done, an exposed root will be painful to her.
