Why does my cat drool, hiss, and act scared then return to normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 12 years and 3 months old | 10 lbs

Cat is drooling thick ribbons of drool, hisses and makes louder than usual noises, wants to be let out of the house immediately (almost as if he's in a panic), and then acts as if he is afraid of us and runs from us. This has happened 3 times now. It lasts a day or two, then he goes back to his normal behaviors of being friendly and social.

I highly recommend taking a video and bringing Kitty to your veterinarian for a physical examination and diagnostics. It can be a gastrointestinal issue and he may require xrays or blood work. I would take him sooner than later. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
