My elderly cat has asthma. Are steroids deadly? What are alternatives?

My vet says my elderly cat has asthma. Extensive tests were not done but she was put on Prednisolone at 5 mg per day. I give her half doses as I just buried another old gal that was also taking it for allergies. My folks were on Prednisone when they died so I know the stuff is deadly! Is there anything else I can give my old cat to help here breathe without killing her?? Thanks for any advice! Lisa. Pet's info: Cat | Snowshoe | Female | spayed | 14 years and 7 months old | 14 lbs

Unfortunately steroids is the only available treatment but in most cases low dose steroids are effective enough (as low as 1 mg per day) to control the condition and at this dosage it is not a health issue.
