My dog's knee clicks after CCL surgery. Is it serious? When can she play?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shorthaired Pointer | Female | spayed | 8 years and 1 month old | 55 lbs

Penny had the Lateral Suture repair for a torn CCL beginning of June. She has recovered well, but I notice a clicking sound when she walks. I don't think she's in pain, but she does occasionaly walk w/a slight limp. Anyway, is this a red flag that maybe the suture isn't holding well?? Also she does tend to jump on furniture but I have kept her off stairs for the most part. How long until I can let her run around/play without me watching her like a hawk?? Thanks for your time! I appreciate it!

The clicking may be due to an injury to the meniscus in her knee. The meniscus provides additional stability and cushioning between the bones that make up the knee joint. It is common to see meniscal injury along with cruciate injuries. Ideally, she should be rechecked by your veterinarian. In some cases, surgery is required to repair or remove the meniscus. Strenuous play or running should be avoided until at least 12 weeks post op and then, it should only be for very short periods of time. Each dog recovers differently, so the timetable to resume regular activity is flexible.
