My dog is chewing herself raw. What can I do until I see the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Female | unspayed | 1 year old | 30 lbs

I have no idea what's going on. She's been chewing on herself. I've had a cone on it to stop her but today I noticed how bad its gotten. How can I treat it until I take her to a vet.

I recommend calling your veterinarian in the morning and putting a cone on Sophie. My concern is a hotspot which is a localized infection but due to the location she may also have an anal gland infection/abscess. Without a physical examination, it is hard to tell. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
