My dog has a splenic mass & breathing issues. Can she survive surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 6 years and 7 months old | 60 lbs

Hi, black female lab, neutered, 6yrs, couldn't get up and laboured breathing, temperature, today. Vet says prelim scan shows mass on spleen but over the holiday no specialist for 4 days. The owner wants to give her up and put her down but I want to give her a chance of surgery once the main scan can be done. Am I being unfair? She is in the hospital on a drip and still laboured breathing. She's only 6, she could survive? Thank you

Not necessarily. It depends on the cause of the mass. Now if it’s a splenic hemangiosarcoma, the life expectancy with surgery is three months, and that’s if Bessy survives the surgery. The mass could be something like an abscess, but I can’t say for certain. You can try to give her a chance, and maybe luck will be in your favor and it’s not cancer. But if it is cancer, letting her go is the kindest option. I hope this helps.
