My 8-year-old cat is peeing outside box with bloody stool. Vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | British Longhair | Male | neutered | 8 years and 1 month old | 6 lbs

My cat is 8 years old and has recently been having some issues. He has a history of vomiting, and was given special food for it and he was fine for several months. He now only occasionally vomits. This past week he has peed on his scratching mat/rug which is in the house twice, and he has had two very light coloured, loose shiny stools in his litter box. One looked a little mucousy and I saw some red flecks which may be blood, but not sure. Wanted to know if I should take him to the vet or wait

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Hugo. Yes, I do recommend that he sees his veterinarian. The diarrhea can be a result of his underlying gastrointestinal disease or a separate new problem. He may have urinated outside of the box as he is not feeling well. I suspect his veterinarian will want to test both urine and fecal samples though to determine how best to treat him. I hope this information helps!
