Is Chloramphenicol safe for my kitten? Are there safer alternatives?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male

I got a stray kitten home 5-6weeks old. Its been given deworming medicine. The vet I visited has prescribed Paraxin Chloramphenicol syrup 5drops twice a day. But after 2 doses of one day ,I realized that it is a very harmful medicine for cats as well as humans who are administering it. Can you suggest some safe alternative with dosage for my kitten that is available in India easily? I am very worried about my kitten's and my health now.

Chloramphenicol does have some serious side effects in humans, so it is recommend that humans wear gloves when administering the medication to animals. There are lots of other options on antibiotics, but that should be discussed with your vet based on their diagnosis. We can't make specific recommendations on drugs or dosages as it is illegal for us to do so over the internet in the US.
