My dog eats paper and has dry, hard stool. Is she constipated?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 2 years and 3 months old | 75 lbs

My dog has recently had a change in stool production. The last few days it has been like rabbit pellets, very dry and crumbles once she goes. Her appetite, water consumption and activity all normal with no change. Recently tested negative for fecal and HW. She is on a once a month HW preventative. No change in diet. Gets pumpkin once a weekly to help with digestion. She does however get into and things she’s not suppose to, particularly toilet paper, napkins and tissues. What can I do ?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Brindi. This can be a sign of constipation. Try feeding her canned food and add water to it to see if that helps. Keep all paper products out of her reach as best you can. If giving her canned food with water in it doesn't help, have her seen by a vet again. Best of luck.
