My cat has a severe infection. What's the best way to get him better?

The wound looks badly infected, the fur around the wound needs to be clipped and the wound needs to be cleaned, he will need to receive an antibiotic injection, you will need to take him to the vet in order to get proper treatment.

Surgery may be needed to clean the edges and see if the wound can be repaired. Often times, this does require some times for the tissue to declare itself before this is done to see what tissue will be healthy to save. All you can do until it is ready for surgery is keep it clean and stay on antibiotics to prevent an infection. Rechecks should be frequent to determine when surgery would be best. Cats are the best at healing and granulating in new tissue as long as the infection stays under control.

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria or fungal). A check up, appropriate disinfection and antibiotics or antifungal meds are absolutely needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can be possibly started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths, but a check up is necessary. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking. Oh my. I can see that your pet has a severe infection here. You wil need to take your kitty to the vet to have this taken care of unfortunately. This is too severe to treat at home. Until you can get her seen its best to soak this area well with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water to help antisepitcally clean it. The vet ill need to get her on oral antibiotics or an injectable antibiotic that they can give that lasts for 2 weeks. She also will need to have this area shaved to remove the hair and possibly a topical prescribed by your vet. I do hope that your fur baby Crunchie is able to get this resolved soon! A year is a long time to have a skin lesion. Unfortunately you need to know what the lesion is and also why it has been persistent before you can know what medication you need. This could be due to allergies, hyperthyroidism, autoimmune disease, cancer or even something like MRSA. I recommend to have Silky examined by the veterinarian and have some tests run as son as you can get him in. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. Treat for fleas. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for pets, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Wearing gloves, you can wash the lesions once a day with a medicated wipe for cats (not his whole body, just the lesions) if he will allow you. Don't get bitten. It is very hard to tell by the picture, but at this time it appears to be a superficial wound and not very deep. I do not appreciate any swelling around the lesion. At this time if Patxi is eating, drinking, non painful and does not have a fever I would continue to treat it topically. At anytime Patxi develops a fever ,swelling under the lesion or change in behavior I would think antibiotics are warranted.

This looks like a severe abscessation that requires antibiotics and appropriate disinfection. You can request an house call at your local veterinarian if possible or otherwise they may give you a bland sedative to be able to put him into the cat carrier.

He needs to go to the vet. The area is very inflamed and infected and will need antibiotics to be fixed. You can clean the area with mild soap and water to start. make sure to clean the food and water bowl daily and change to a glass or stainless steel one. This can often be an allergic reaction from rubbing against things such as the bowls.

That is a pretty large wound! That being said though, it looks like it is healing fine. It does not appear swollen or to have discharge coming from it. The tissue looks healthy. Having it stitched when it first happened which would have allowed it to heal faster. I am not sure how long it's been but a wound that size would take weeks to heal without stitches. If I were you I would keep applying a topical antibiotic cream and just leave it be. Stop using the Betadine. If he is licking it you must stop that behavior by using an Elizabethan collar (cone). Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Stormy! I would shave the fur away from the wound then clean it well with water and a mild soap (avoid hydrogen peroxide). Then apply triple antibiotic ointment twice daily. The most important thing is to have Stormy wear and E-collar to prevent licking and keep him indoors. He should see a Vet as soon as possible to at a minimum get antibiotics but to also see if surgery is required to close the wound.
