My dog has hip pain, is limping & whining. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 7 months old

My dog is about 3 years old and it’s a Lab and Aussie Shepherd mix. She is very energetic, but I have realized that she had been less active and whines for not apparent reason, so I thought, until she tried to jump on the bed and howled in pain. I tried to pick her up and she did it again. She has been laying down all day and whining from the pain. I decided to feel her back legs after I saw her limping and I found that the pain is coming from her hips. What is wrong with her? What do I do?

I would have Quinn examined by a vet to determine what is going on. If she is painful over her hips, she could have a muscle sprain/knot or it could be related to a bony issue, like hip dysplasia. The vet will do a thorough orthopedic exam and may recommend x-rays to examine the bones more closely.
