Why is my dog's chin wet after sleeping? When should I be concerned?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labradoodle | Male | neutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 32 lbs

Dog woke up for the first time with a wet chin. He is otherwise dry and doesn’t drool. Was acting normal otherwise. What are causes of a wet chin and when is there cause for concern? Thanks.

If the wetness is just clear saliva, then we can assume that this is just caused by excessive drooling during sleep. This can be caused by a mild upset stomach. If you are otherwise not seeing any vomiting, diarrhea or lack of appetite, then this is likely nothing to be terribly concerned about. You can try offering a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese for a few days if Marvel does seem to have an upset tummy. Also consider a diet change if you aren't feeding a high quality, easily digestible diet. My top brands are Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Eukanuba or Purina. Otherwise monitor the wet area and make sure there are no swellings or signs of infection (yellow discharge) that should be brought to the attention of your veterinarian. I hope Marvel continues to do well moving forward. Best wishes and take care!
