Why does my dog have a red circular sore on his face? Is it ringworm?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | neutered | 75 lbs

My dog has a red, circular sore on his cheek and it looks like he is getting another smaller a little underneath it. I’ve been noticing my other dog licking his face for about a week now and just saw the sore today. Can you tell me what it possibly is? If it was ringworm then I believe my other dog would have gotten it by now. What do you think?

Those spots on Prince could be several things including allergies, skin mites, flea bites, ringworm (which humans can get) or a bacterial infection. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can wash the lesions with soap once a day and rinse well (don't wash his whole body, just those spots). Protect the areas from licking or scratching. If they don't start looking better within about a week or if they get worse, have him examined by his veterinarian who may prescribe medications. If this is ringworm, yes, your other dog could already be infected. Lesions may not show up for up to 4 weeks so keep a close eye on the pup. Also go ahead and stop the other pet from licking the area. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.
