My spayed cat has clear, pungent vaginal discharge. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 2 years and 7 months old | 8 lbs

I own a 2 year old cat, she was a rescue and previously had kittens but has since been desexed. Approximately every month or two she has a clear, pungent vaginal discharge. This only lasts around a day or so. She seems perfectly healthy otherwise. I haven't come across this before with previous cats I have owned and would like advice. Thanks

This is likely to be due to a recurrent vaginitis or probably a uterine infection (stump pyometra). A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed.
