My dog's claw came off. What's the best way to look after his paw?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | neutered | 9 years and 10 months old

Hi, my dog caught his claw while we were out walking and his claw has come off. It bled at the time but has now stopped. I was wondering what is the best way for me to look after it, I have washed it since we got home. He is walking on it normally and doesn't seem to be in any discomfort or licking it. Thanks.

Poor Paddt! Sometimes these nails need to be removed behind the break. It's hard to give you the best advice without being able to examined the nail. I recommend to have Paddt examined by the veterinarian. He should also be wearing an elizabethan collar at all times to prevent any licking since this could make the nail infected. The area should be kept clean and dry and the exercise should be severely restricted until the nail is healed (no walks, running or jumping). I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
