My senior unspayed dog won't eat, is wobbly. Pregnant or pyometra?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | unspayed | 12 years and 7 months old | 8.5 lbs

Hello! I have a 14 year old Maltese and on Thursday night she started feeling bad, wasn’t eating, and walking wobbly. My family claims it was because she ran out of water and was dehydrated as she’s used to drinking water frequently. It is Saturday, and is refusing to eat. She is drinking water, but I’m still concerned. She is not neutered and was found mating with the neighbors dog, so could there be a possibility she is pregnant? Please let me know, thank you!

If she isn't spayed, she could be pregnant, but at 12 years of age, a bigger concern could be a life-threatening infection of the uterus called pyometra. I would recommend that you have Layla examined by a vet ASAP to determine if this could be the case, or what is making her not feel well at this time.
