My cat has muscle spasms or tremors when sleeping. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 10 lbs

My cat has been having what I believe is muscle spasms or tremors today. While laying down or sleeping either his belly or arm or leg will tighten and release multiple times in a row. He ate played and used the litter box as normal. He is a little over a year old and he’s been fostered since the day he was born. He was on a diet of Purina Naturals but I’ve just changed to Welness Indoor today as I read purina can cause issues. I’m very worried and hope you can help!

It's quite hard to appreciate exactly what you mean without seeing these tremors. However, it is very promising that he was otherwise well during the day. It may simply be movement of the muscles during sleep which often happens. Alternatively he may have strained a muscle and it could be in spasm. If the issue persists I would certainly go to your vet and have him examined. I don't think it sounds like anything too serious, but I understand that you are worried and a trip to the vets msy help alleviate this.
