Why does my senior dog have painful, itchy black crust on her head?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | spayed | 12 lbs

My dog has black crust in her head. She keeps itching it. And she we'll not let me touch it. She acts like it's painful and itchy. I try to give her a bath and she we'll try break her neck to get out. I have a video but I don't know what it is or what to do. She is 17years old. I believe she is a maltesse.

Poor Sasha! it sounds like she needs to be examined by the veterinarian. These symptoms could describe an infection in her skin. Sometimes the infection is the primary problem but other times it's related to allergies or endocrine disease. Occasionally, these symptoms can describe a disease of the oil glands as well. She will likely need oral medications and possibly some topical wipes. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
