Why is my unneutered male cat peeing outside the litter box?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | unneutered | 11 months and 29 days old | 1lb

My male cat storm is peeing everywhere around the house. He does use litter box also. I clean the litter box 2 times a day minimum. Can you please tell me what is wrong and how can it be stopped.

I see Storm isn't neutered. Male intact cats often mark their territory with their urine, and that may be what he is doing. It could also be he has feline idiopathic cystitis or bladder stones. I'd have him seen by a vet to get checked out for those two medical illness and to discuss having him neutered.

Hello, sorry to hear about Ody. I would be concerned that he is having feline idiopathic cystitis also known as feline lower urinary tract disease. This is inflammation of their lower urinary tract, most often associated with stress but it could also be seen with a UTI or even bladder stones/crystals. If so, this condition could lead to a urinary obstruction which is a life threatening. If Ody is seen straining to urinate, having painful urinations, visiting the litter box frequently without being able urinate then he should be seen by a veterinarian immediately. Hope this helps and best of luck

These all seem like potentially unrelated problems. The mounting behavior and potentially urinating outside the litter box could be related to hormones and neutering could make a big difference. If he is urinating small puddles and not spraying droplets of urine on vertical surfaces it would be a good idea to see your vet to rule out lower urinary tract disease as a cause of the inappropriate urination. It is not uncommon for some cats to be very food motivated and to seek out food - restricting access and never giving treats can help keep this behavior in check

While a behavioral cause is possible, it’s important to rule out a medical condition such as a urinary tract infection or crystals in the urine which can cause pain and house soiling. I recommend to have JB examined and his urine checked by his veterinarian to look for abnormalities. The vet also may recommend a medication if it appears to be behavioral. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
