My tortoise's neck, eyes, and mouth are swollen. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Reptile | Tortoise | Female | unspayed | 50 lbs

Tortoise has a massively swollen neck, eyes, & mouth. Not exactly sure how old she is. Been in current home about 7 yrs. She was a mess with massive pyramiding, a respiratory infection, shell rot. Got her fixed up & She’s been doing great for 7 yrs...there’s been no change in her diet, habitat, etc. Any thoughts on what could have caused the swelling? Location, southern California.

Hello. You really need to find a veterinarian that treats exotics. This much swelling could be a sign of heart disease, but other issues can be at hand. I hope you can have her checked out soon. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
