Why is my French Bulldog losing hair and it's growing back different?

My 3 and a half year old french Bulldog has recently been loosing a lot of hair, more than his normal winter / summer coat shedding and it’s been consistent for over two weeks now. He has no skin irritation and isn’t scratching however where his hair is falling out it’s growing back a different colour and texture. I’m wondering if there could be some sort of underlying issue but he isn’t displaying any other symptoms

That is unusual. It's possible he is experiencing some changes in his hormones. Environmental allergies and melatonin responsive dermatosis are also possible.
