My neutered cat is mounting my other cat. Is this normal behavior?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

I have 2 cats. One neutered(black,T'challa) and one not(Tabby,Toby). The neutered one tried to mount my other cat last night. The cats hve a very good relationship after the first few weeks of introduction. They groom each other and play and cuddle together. Nither cats behavior has changed last night, so imve got no clue what to do. Should i stay out of their relationship (bros or not) and let them work it out? Or should i seperate them? Im also not sure of health risks if my cats are.....gay.

Cats can exhibit mounting behavior of other cats and objects like pillows. The behavior is generally benign (there is not penetration) unless one cat bites the back of the neck too hard (this could break the skin an cause an abscess). Most cats will not tolerate this and will let the other cat know. Certainly stop the behavior is one cat is being bullied or there is a risk of physical harm. Some play behavior can also look like mounting (with mouthing, climbing on the other cat) but it's just wrestling. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
