Skin darkening can occur due to natural aging, low level irritation from infection or allergies, a healed wound or changes in hormone levels from hypothyroidism. Your veterinarian may be able to determine the exact cause after a thorough physical exam. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

This hyper pigmentation of the skin is usually related to a chronic inflammation. Yeast or mite chronic infection could be responsible for that. I would recommend a check up and appropriate treatment which may include medicated shampoo (like Malaseb shampoo). Please do not hesitate to contact us again on the forum or by requesting a consultation (where you can post pictures ) if you have any more questions or to discuss it any further.
