Why does my dog get aggressive and growl when I approach his bone?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 40 lbs

My dog showed extreme signs of aggression when we tried to get close to him while he had his Nylor dog bone. His teeth came out with vicious growling to the point he frightened us.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is of course unacceptable behavior and it is called food aggression. This is usually corrected with appropriate training. I would highly recommend you consider reaching out to a dog trainer who can work with you in person to correct this. Best of luck!
