How do I get my puppy to sleep through the night without a crate?

How do we get our puppy to sleep through the night? We sleep from midnight till 8 or 9 am, but almost every night she will wake up and start trying to play with us at 4 or 5 am. P.S.- We do not use a crate for her, we rescued her from someone that used to lock her in a crate, starve and hit her. She seems to be traumatized anytime a crate comes in eye sight, so we just returned the crate we got originally. How do we solve this issue? Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! While it may seem too simple, the best way to resolve this issue is by ignoring her when she tries to play at those times. Eventually she will learn that it is not ok to do that and will stop waking up at that time to do it. Keep in mind though that she is a puppy and is behaving like a puppy would be expected to.
