Do I need to remove all toxic plants before bringing home a cat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Is it worth it or advised to remove all possibly poisonous plants or just the ones that are especially toxic to cats before getting one? I did some research and my home has around 6 plants that are supposedly poisonous to them, and I want to make sure that the feline won’t just have possibly dangerous substances sitting right next to it. I live in the U.S.

Hello. It is always best to be safe than to be sorry. If you are at all unsure about a plant, it may be best to either move it to a room the cat cannot get access to, or rehome the plant. This is much cheaper & less heartbreaking than dealing with a sick kitty. I am so glad you are thinking agead. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
