Is it safe to apply omega-3 oil directly to my cat's allergic skin?

My senior cat suffers from skin allergies and her doctor prescribed omega 3 oil once a day. Is it ok to apply the oil directly in her affected skin? Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 16 years and 7 months old | 12 lbs
