My cat's spider bite area is dark and growing. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 13 lbs

I took my cat to the vet last week because of a wound on his back and they said it was probably a spider bite and gave him a shot of antibiotics and steroids. They didn’t say anything about his skin being discolored but it seems to be getting darker and bigger. I just want to make sure this is normal and my cat doesn’t have some flesh eating bacteria or anything like that.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This may still be normal after a spider bite. However, something like an abscess or a growth cannot be ruled out just by looking at it. I would recommend you continue the course. However, if this gets worse such as getting larger, I recommend you consider having it sampled to make sure he is not developing anything else. Best of luck!
