My dog won't urinate after ACL surgery. What should I do to help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed | 7 years and 5 months old | 85.98 lbs

My dog had ACL surgery yesterday. She can't walk so she can't do her business. Will my dog be fine if she doesn't urinate for a couple more days? Is there any way we could help her do her business?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Not being able to posture to urinate or wak is an issue. A dog should not go more than 18-24 hours without urinating as that can result in severe discomfort and even metabolic imbalances. This requires a visit to a veterinarian as soon as possible so that they can consider passing a urinary catheter and possibly recommending other pain control medications as it is not normal or expected to not be able to walk to urinate at this point. Have a good day!
