Why is my dog's bark squeaky after boarding? Should I be concerned?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd - miniature | Male | neutered | 3 years and 3 months old | 17.63 lbs

My dog got back from around a week of boarding and now his bark has changed completely. It’s like he isn’t able to bark and only squeaks come out. What could be the reason for this and should I be worried?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! While this could in theory be a reason of concern as some of the possible reasons is a tumor for example, this could also be due to barking too much while boarding. I would recommend that you continue to monitor Leo for now. If this does not go away on its own, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment. They can then examine this. Best of luck!
