My rat gave birth unexpectedly! What should I do now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rat | Female | unspayed

I got two pet rats approx. 3 weeks ago and was told they were both males however yesterday one has given birth to between 10-12 babies. I'm not sure what to do. I've given the mum food and water and extra nourishment. She gave birth in a hanging den and I have had to move the den so it is now resting on the floor of her cage but she is now putting a lot of bedding inside the den and also on top of it and I'm panicking. Please can you advise???

Hello. The first thing to do is remove or isolate the male rat so he does not harm the pups. Then, just relax & let mum do her thing. She is providing warmth & protection to her young, & as long as she has easy access to food & water, she will nurse them well. Good luck & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
