My dog's laryngeal paralysis surgery failed. Should I try again?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Springer Spaniel | Male | neutered | 3 years and 7 months old

I have a 3 year old springer spaniel with laryngeal paralysis. He has had surgery which has failed. Would you think a second surgery to tie back the other side beneficial. He is an active dog of working origins and it is very difficult to see him struggle so. He is continually quartering and on the move when out and often is quite distressed with loud painful panting. Our vet said that it might be better to put him to sleep, but I want to do my best to help him live a normal life.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Another surgery can be considered and there are always options to try before considering euthanasia. I would highly recommend you consider meeting with a board certified surgeon so that all the options can be considered. At that time they can discuss with you the pros and cons of these options and you can then make an informed decision. I really hope they can help Dexter!!!
