Why does my dog avoid my other dog and refuse to play?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | unspayed

Hello, I have 2 dogs named Bella and Krissie. Krissie is a golden retriever while Bella is a yellow lab. Everytime Bella looks at Krissie or comes up to her, Krissie looks away and never makes eye contact ever when Bella confronts her. Bella doesn’t harm her.. she doesn’t make any noises (unless it’s a growl because Krissie doesn’t “obey” her?) I’m not sure if I described it right and this is what’s happening... Krissie seems nervous around Bella and they never play with each other.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! They are probably communicating with each other. This does not mean that they do not like each other necessarily. This is just their interaction which is ok. Not every dog is playful with other dogs. My dogs for example get along fine and play with other dogs but do not play with each other. It is not a concerning thing. It is just their type of interaction and how they interact with each other which I just have to sit back and respect. In summary, I would not be concerned about this. Have a great day!
