My dog is coughing and shaking. Is it a cold or something serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 65 lbs

Is it possible for dogs to get a cold? My one year old pit bull has been coughing more than usual and is shaking when he’s not sleeping. He hasn’t eaten much but does drink water and is going to the bathroom as usual.

Dogs can get colds, however more serious issues such as infections, respiratory issues, allergies and even canine influenza can mimic cold symptoms in dogs as well. If Bentley's symptoms don't resolve after a day, his coughing continues or he seems in distress, he doesn't want to eat or drink, or he has a fever, seeking veterinary care ASAP to figure out the issue is best.
