My senior cat lost weight after urinary issues. Could it be kidneys?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

My 12 yr old male cat had a blocked bladder about five years ago. We took him to a vet. About 3 months ago he would yell when urinating but still went. We put him on urinary tract food and he no longer meows when going but has lost weight. He urinates ok. But wondering if it's his kidneys. He drinks and eats good.

Cats that are losing protein through their kidneys can lose weight. With your cat's medical history, I would recommend having him examined by the vet. Blood work will check the kidneys and urinalysis will look for extra protein in the urine. The blood work can also screen for other issues that can cause weight loss.
