Why is my dog's nipple swollen after giving birth, but she's not in pain?

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 7 months old

My Jack Russell had 4 pups 3 days ago and her bottom nipple is very very swollen but she's not crying or coming across like she's in pain.. what could be wrong?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bella. The pups may not be nursing that gland as often resulting in engorgement. I recommend encouraging the pups to use that gland. The other concern I have is that mastitis could be starting. Ideally she should see her veterinarian to ensure that this is not the case. I hope this information helps!

    Thank you for submitting your question regarding Marley. Are the puppies eating any solid food yet? If so, her body may be adjusting to the decrease in milk demand. Mild engorgement can result as she adjusts. However, if they are still exclusively nursing and she seems to not be feeling well, then I would be more concerned. I recommend discussing this with her veterinarian to see if she needs to seen. I hope this information helps!

    It sounds like she may have mastitis. I suggest you have your vet look at her especially if the teats are hard, swollen and/or painful. If you would like to post again with some photos we may be able to help you more.
