My puppy has a constant runny nose and is coughing, what should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 2 months and 7 days old | 18 lbs

The young puppy that I recently got has been having some health problems. His nose is running almost constantly, especially when he's sleeping, to the point where it has dried and covered up a whole nostril. Then today he started coughing like he was going to cough something up, I'm not sure what's wrong.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This may be due to an upper respiratory infection that could be now affecting the lower respiratory system as well such as kennel cough. It is very important that you have Teddy evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to gather more information and proceed with an exam to determine what would be best at this point. They are likely going to consider prescribing antibiotics. I am hoping for a speedy recovery!
