My dog is throwing up white clear phlegm after playing, is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 2 years and 4 months old | 42 lbs

I just got kona a new frisbee. I got home and she was excited. When started to throw it and within 3 throws she was hacking up white and clear phlegm-like substance. We went inside and she drank a whole bowl of water. We continued to play. No more throwing up or coughing. Just frequent panting. However she is still sniffing around and playing normally. Is this normal for a dog to throw up a white and clear phlegm? She ate two hours before the throw up and had acted fine all morning before I left

It's not normal to throw up from running around and playing. It's possible Kona has some tracheal irritation from a low grade infection or allergies and the exercise caused it to become worse. Irritation in the stomach could also cause the same clinical signs. You may consider having Kona examined by the veterinarian to be on the safe side. Resting Kona for the next week may also help (no activity that makes her pant or run). Monitor her for any respiratory symptoms such as coughing, sneezing or a runny nose. Also monitor her for an GI signs like vomiting, diarrhea or not eating well. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
