Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 13 years and 9 months old | 15 lbs
Hi, my dog has just started to hesitate to climb stairs. At first we thought she had difficulties or pain in her hind legs, but after a quick check up, we noticed her belly was tight and hard, and she yelped in pain when I picked her up. We went on a walk afterwards thinking she was constipated and it wpuld help. She did a normal stool first and later on one that was very liquid. We immediately saw there was some kind of transparent gel in her stool, more than there was poop. What could it be?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Maggie. The gel with her feces was likely mucus. This can occur secondary to inflammation in the colon which is common with diarrhea. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian to determine the cause of her symptoms. Her hindlimbs and lower back should also be assessed. It is unusual for a dog to be hesitant on stairs simply due to diarrhea. I hope this information helps!
