Why is my dog sick, shaking, not eating, and not improving with meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Wire Haired) | Female | unspayed | 10 lbs

My dog, who is usually very energetic and happy, recently started excluding herself and staying away from everyone. She is very shaky, hard to get to eat, squeals when you try to help her sometimes, and walks around with her tail down and a sad look in her eyes. I just want her to feel better. We took her to the vet and they said her blood tests were perfect but she had a fever so we got antibiotics, but they dont seem to be helping. Do you know what could be wrong with her?

Hello. What an adorable picture of Beretta! Based on the description of her symptoms & that she is a dachshund, I would definitely want to eliminate any possibility that she may have some intervertebral disc disease. This is just so common in this breed. There are also some diseases/conditions that may not be apparent with routine bloodwork & additional testing may be necessary. Was your vet able to obtain a urine sample? A urinary tract infection can make a pet pretty miserable. I would want to see how she does on some pain medication, but x-rays may be helpful as possibly a change in antibiotics. If Beretta is not feeling better by tomorrow, please contact your vet for further investigation. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Unfortunately, I can't begin to guess at what is going on. There can be many causes of a fever, including autoimmune disease, bacterial infection somewhere on or in the body, viral infection, etc. A fever could certainly explain her symptoms. I would continue to work with your vet to figure out what is going on with Beretta.
