How to prevent weight gain in my spayed puppy still growing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 10 days old | 25 lbs

Birdie was spayed yesterday. I know she still has a lot of growing to do, but I also know spaying has an effect of metabolism. Do I reduce calories now, or do I wait until she’s an adult? I will watch he body shape to adjust as necessary. I would just like to prevent weight gain if I can. Thanks!!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is no need to do that for now at all even if she is spayed as she is growing now. You said it best. It is more important to look at their body and determine if they are gaining or losing weight. That is the best way to know how they are doing with the food intake. Best of luck!
