Dog's sensitive hindquarters: Heat, constipation, or obstruction?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed

My dog seems to be coming into her second heat cycle, there has been very little spotting. She is very sensitive in her hind quarters and she will rub her lower back against our couch and cry. She is a chewer and gets all of the squeakies out of her toys. Wondering if constipation or swallowing an obstruction may be to blame instead of coming in heat. Please help...

Hello. Generally, if there is some obstruction, a pet will be very painful in their abdomen often accompanied by vomiting or retching, loss of appetite, lethargy & possibly bloating. A constipated dog will spend much time hunched up as if trying to have a bowel movement or there can actually be pooching of the anal region. If Dixie seems to have a fairly normal appetite, there is no vomiting, & her vulva is swollen, then she is probably just coming into heat. Your veterinarian can determine very quickly if anything is wrong, so if Dixie's behavior continues to concern you, please have her examined as soon as convenient. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
