Is Royal Canin or Taste of the Wild dog food better for my dog?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 17 lbs

What is your opinion of Taste of the Wild? A lot of people don't seem to like it, but it's made in the US and seems to have better ingredients than other brands I've seen. My vet recommends Royal Canin, but the 2nd ingredient is a by-product so I don't trust it anymore. Any tips? Thanks in advance!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Skye. Personally, I agree with your veterinarian. Royal Canin is a superior product to Taste of the Wild. They have many veterinarians on staff to formulate their diets and out extensive research into their foods. Taste of the Wild seems to spend a ton of money on advertising. There is a lot of misinformation regarding pet foods. By-products are not lower quality ingredients. For example, if a wolf in the wild kills a moose to eat, it does not eat the skeletal muscle of the limbs first. It eats the internal organs as.these have a higher concentration of nutrients. I recently had a chance to speak with an ecologist at a university on this very topic. By-products are typically organ meat. Bottom line though, you need a food that works for your individual dog. I hope this information helps!

As a regular food I would never recommend Royal Canin. As you pointed the ingredients are not the best, especially when compared to food such as Blue Buffalo and Orijen. Unfortunately sometimes a dog or cat need a prescription diet for a specific condition. Those conditions can greatly benefits from those special diets and Royal Canin is one of the best in that area.

Royal canin is a quality food very well balanced nutritionally and with very good results clinically. It would ny preferred range for taste/acceptance, overall nutritional balance and digestibility. It is guaranteed to be a fixed formula so every bag is identical whereas some brands will vary batch by batch using cheapest ingredients each time

Thank you for submitting your question regarding pet food. No, I do not believe Royal Canin is a bad pet food company. They do extensive research on their diets and offer high quality products. Furthermore, they offer veterinary support for product questions. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation available regarding pet food. My top most trusted brands and Purina, Royal Canin and Hills. I hope this information helps!
