My dog's long, brittle nail broke to the quick. What can I do at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | 1 year and 10 months old | 110 lbs

My sister's dog is 2 years old and his nails have gotten really really bad. They are long and very brittle. We took him to the dog park on Saturday evening and his pinky nail broke all the way to the quick. We cleaned it really thoroughly with peroxide and put lidocaine on it. But is there anything else that we can do here at home?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is really not much more you can do at home. You have done a good job so far. Now this is likely going to continue to improve slowly but it will take time to do so. If he appears to be painful, it would be best to go to a veterinarian as they can proceed to cut the rest of the nail so it heals quicker and also send him home on pain control medications. Best of luck!
