My stray cat has a red, bleeding stomach growth. Could it be cancer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | 6 lbs

There is a little stray cat that lives by my friend’s house. She is very friendly and will come when called and will meow outside the door if she wants attention. Now that I’ve earned her trust, she lets me do basically anything to her. Because of this, I was able to get her laying on her back and I noticed a growth on her stomach. It is red and bleeds occasionally. Her ear has been clipped, which I know is a sign she is spayed. I’m worried that she may have cancer and am looking for an opinion.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good day!
