Why is my dachshund aggressively chewing her tail after back meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 8 years and 5 months old | 16 lbs

My dachshund has been acting like her back has been sore for a few days. We took her to the vet and they gave her some nsaids. Since then, I have noticed she has been aggressively chewing at her tail and won’t let me touch it or get close to it. She has chewed hair off in a patch on her tail. She is on flea medication, so I doubt that’s the issue. What is going on with her tail? Is this cause to take her back to the vet?

I am sorry to hear about Bones! I would recommend revisiting her veterinarian for an exam. In some dogs, even with flea prevention, they can get just one flea bite and it can cause an allergic type reaction if they are hypersensitive to flea bites, causing inflammation and intense itching even though there is no sign of fleas. Another possibility we would be conerned about would be a neurological pain such as a pinched nerve or spinal cord compression given her back pain and they may want to change or add more pain medication in case it is pain causing her to bite at her tail.
