My guinea pig won't let me trim their nails. What's the best way?

Hi, I've had my guinea pigs for a few months now, and have read that I should be clipping their nails. I bought a nail clipper, but the guinea pigs won't let me get anywhere close with it. How do I go about trimming? Thank you!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You can try to get someone to help you clip her nails by holding her in the process. If that does not work, it would be best to have this done at your veterinarian's office as they are experts in restraining and making sure that is done appropriately. Best of luck!

    I would start with finding a treat that Fluffy really likes and never had before. Than daily I would offer her this special treat only from you. After a few days I would offer the treat and touch her feet at the same time. Than work your way up to being about to give her special treats and lifting her foot. hopefully this will allow her to become more comfortable and give you time to trim her nails. hope that helps

    You can try making a "bunny burrito" by wrapping her in a towel (with her head out so she can breath) and pulling out one foot at a time. If she still won't cooperate then I would call your local vet. Many vet offices will do nail trims on rabbits.

Hello. You can use very small toenail clippers & just snip the tips off the nails. It is not necessary to cut too much off at one time. You might want to pick up some styptic from the pharmacy in case you do get a nail bleeding. This will cauterize & stop the bleeding very quickly if you do get a nail too short. If your local Boop by Petco offers grooming services, they likely can trim your guinea pig's nails. You would need to call them directly to request pricing. You can also have your veterinarian trim the nails and show you how so you can do it at home if you choose.

You can ring your local small animal vet and most clinics will offer you an appointment to get nails clipped with a vet or nurse. Some clinics will show you how to do it yourself if you like for the next time.

can i use dog nail clippers to cut my guinea pigs nails there over grown
Yes, however, it will require extreme caution. The bigger size of the dog nail clippers will make it harder to judge where the cut is occurring. Human toenail or fingernail clippers can be really useful in these little guys. I hope that helps you! Thanks for asking Boop by Petco!

Would my local pet store (PetSmart) be able to clip my guinea pigs nails? I know that they have grooming services for cats and dogs. I am worried that if I try myself, I will injure them.
I think the best way to find out whether your local PetSmart can clip your guinea pig's nails is to call them and ask. However you can also go to your vet and have the techs show you how it is done properly.

You will need to contact the individual grooming salon for this information. It all depends on the groomers who work there. Banfield Pet Hospital may have some clinics who offer guinea pig nail trimming as well. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

How do i know when i should cut my guinea pig's nails? They are only 4 months old but their nails are SO SHARP! But i dont want to scare them or hurt them. Maybe their nails are supposed to be super sharp and long? They look like the picture attacthe
The nails of your guinea pig are borderline long, . The nails help your guinea pig to have traction on smooth surfaces. This is important, as a guinea pig is a prey animal and needs to get away quickly , if necessary. You can use normal nail clippers to cut Milo's nails. Make sure you inspect the nails thoroughly and do not cut into the quick (where the blood vessel runs). It may be best to have a vet tech at your vet's show you how to do this properly.

We have a few female guinea pigs and are wondering what the best way to trim their toe nails are? Also, how often should they be trimmed?
You can buy Trimmers at any pet store, but also human toe nail trimmers turned sideways work great too. Make sure you just get the white tips, do not get close to the pink quick. If they have black nails use the white nails as a guide on how far to cut the back ones. You probably don’t need to trim them more than every 2 months or so.

My guinea pig Ella has these things on her paws and they stick to the paws. I don't know what it is or how to handle it, but I don't want to do anything with them because I don't want want to risk hurting her. Can you help me?
Hello. Thank you for using Boop by Petco! The first thing I see is that Ella needs her nails trimmed desperately. If you don't know how to do it yourself you will need to get her to a vet so they can do it for you and teach you how. You can also find YouTube videos on how to do this. The second thing is that her foot is very red/irritated and it looks like she has fecal material stuck to it. I suspect she has a skin infection. This should not happen unless she is sitting in a dirty cage, has incorrect bedding and/or a cage with a wire bottom. I suggest you review your husbandry carefully to make sure you are doing everything correctly.
