My Shih Tzu has bloody diarrhea, not pooping, won't drink, hard belly?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 2 years and 4 months old | 15 lbs

my 2 year old shih tzu has had diarrhea 5 times today, the first 3 was normally but the last two had blood and she had one that looked yellow. My local vet told me to give her white rice to bind her up at first she ate that and was acting normal, when she woke me up to go outside about an hour ago she wouldnt eat anything. So i mixed the rice with some of her soft food and she ate all of it but still hasnt drank any water. She hasnt pooped since about 11 last night. Her stomach is slightly hard

You can see a period of not pooping after a dog has diarrhea, so I wouldn't be too concerned just yet. Give Cleo canned food and add water to it. If she hasn't pooped by tomorrow, then I would be worried and have her seen by her vet. Best of luck.

Poor girl. She may be having stress colitis. I would recommend trying a probiotic --> https://www.chewy.com/purina-pro-plan-veterinary-diets/dp/50029 if she is otherwise acting normal, eating and drinking well and your puppy does not also have loose stool. If your puppy has loose stool also then its best to get them checked for intestinal parasites and treated through your vet. If the diarrhea does not improve within 2-3 days of starting the probiotic, then its best to schedule an appt with your vet for stronger medications to resolve her colitis. I hope that Molly's stools normalize soon! Best wishes and take care.
