My dog keeps licking and biting her paws. What's wrong and what to do?

My dog is a golden doodle and she has been putting her whole paw into her mouth and biting and licking it. What should I do?

Dogs will sometimes chew on their paws out of boredom but it can also indicate the foot itches. Look in between the paw pads and the toes, look at the nail beds and check the fur for any thorns or other objects stuck in the fur. If you see any redness, bumps or discharge or any other abnormalities, have Coco examined by the veterinarian.

    I suspect the issue with her nose and feet may be related. She may have some allergies or atopy causing itching which is making her lick her feet. This can also occur due to topical irritation. Dogs will often get a secondary infection from the licking and creating a moist area for bacteria or fungus to grow. Try to stop her from licking, this may require an e-collar. I would recommend a veterinary visit for Georgie to determine the cause and see if she may need any antibiotics or medication to decrease itching. Good luck with her.

Sammie's front paw looks sore. There has been no blood and he isn't limping. He does keep licking it though.
It looks like he might have chewed a hot spot onto his foot. It may have started with a minor scratch or bug bite or allergies. That itched, he chewed it, which irritated the area, which makes it itch more, and so on. I recommend getting him seen by your vet soon to have his skin checked. After an exam and possibly some lab work, your vet will have a better idea what is going on and how best to treat it.

I have a six months old golden doodle puppy. I noticed that he licks his paws very often. Should I be concerned about this?
Thank you for using Boop by Petco. Licking paws can be a sign of allergies. I would monitor for other signs of scratching or itching. Watch to be sure there is not swelling or signs of infection on the feet as well. Sometimes they can get infected due to moisture from licking. I hope this helps.

Why is my dog biting / licking and biting her paw/leg?
They usually do this when something is itching them, or is hurting them. If she is licking/biting more than one leg, then I would be more suspicious of something itching. If it's just one spot on one leg, then it's more likely related to something hurting. I would have to examine her to know any more than that. I hope that helps and all is well with your dog.

My dog often licks or kind of nibbles on his left paw, he didn't like when I tried to take a closer look at it but the paw seemed okay. Any advice on what could be happening to his paw?
Licking at the paw can mean their is an irritation, injury or an allergy. If Archi will not let you closely inspect the paw, I recommend to have him examined by his veterinarian to look for an injury or evidence of infection. Otherwise you can wash the paw well and rinse it. An omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs can help improve skin health and decrease itchiness. If the behavior continues, then he needs to see the vet to check for allergies and discuss next steps. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent further licking. You can try soaking the paw in a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution once orntwice daily. Dry thoroughly afterwards. If there is no sign of improvement in a couple days, have her seen by your veterinarian. Prescription strength medication may be indicated.

My puppy is excessively licking his paws.
Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. Excessive licking can be related to skin infection between the toes, skin inflammation or an allergy. A visit at your local vets is recommended to make the definite diagnosis and to start treatment for Koda. In the meantime, try and stop Koda from licking the paws as he will likely make the skin more inflamed. Using a head collar or bandage the paws (and change the bandage daily) may be necessary.

My 2 year old newfoundland is chewing and biting at her feet and wining.
It sounds like your dog has allergies as chewing and biting the paws is a classic sign of allergies. Have her examind by a vet to treat. Your vet can prescribe an anti-histamine and/or a corticosteroid to help with the itch. if there is an evidnce of an infxtion, she may need an antibiotic. You could also soak her feet in a warm Epsom salt solution to see if that helps, too.

My dog wont stop licking her paws and she recently started bleeding. What do i do?
Poor pup! If Princess is licking her paws to the point that they are bleeding, this is definitely not normal. The most common cause of excessive licking or chewing of the paws is an allergy problem - either seasonal environmental allergies or food allergies can cause this. Other possibilities would include a bacterial or fungal skin infection in this area, or even skin mites (mange). I would recommend having Princess examined by a vet as soon as you are able to - he/she can do some simple skin tests if needed to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate medication to treat it. In the meantime, I would recommend getting an e-collar (plastic cone) for her to wear to prevent her from continuing to lick her paws and make things worse.

My dog has a sore on the top of his paw, I thought it was a cut or burn or something and he was licking it... It then cured and now he has a new one further up his paw...
Wounds on the skin can be caused by a number of things including injuries, parasites such as fleas or ticks, allergies, or even excessive licking. If Coco was licking the area a lot, it is possible that a hot spot has formed causing the wound you see. It is best to prevent him from licking the spot with the use of an Elizabethan (cone) collar. If the spot doesn't heal, worsens, more spots appear, or you see parasites or infection (pus, hot to touch, pain, etc), it is best to seek veterinary care.
